Why these three names keep coming up

Search for Muay Thai training in Phuket and the same three names surface constantly: Tiger Muay Thai, Sinbi Muay Thai and AKA Thailand. That is not an accident. All three have built real, distinct reputations over more than a decade. People planning a trip search for them by name because they have already decided training in Phuket is happening. They are now choosing between specific, known options rather than weighing the idea in the abstract.

That makes this a different question from choosing a camp type in general. This one goes one level deeper: what each of these three specific, frequently searched camps actually is, and how private training with Kru Marn compares to each in turn.

The fight-camp model itself has not changed much in decades: living and training alongside other fighters, structured around a shared timetable. What has changed is how many ways there now are to access Muay Thai coaching in Thailand. Options now range from full immersion camps to boutique gyms built around convenience and individual coaching (NOW Muay Thai, checked 17 September 2026). Tiger, Sinbi and AKA sit at different points on that spectrum. Private training sits off it entirely.

Tiger Muay Thai: Phuket's biggest camp

Tiger Muay Thai opened in 2005 on Soi Ta-iad in Chalong. American William McNamara founded it as what a later feature on the gym's history called "a humble gym on a sleepy road." Thai businessmen led by Viwat Sakulrat bought and rebuilt it in 2015. The camp now covers roughly 9,200 square metres with five boxing rings and a pro-size MMA cage, staffed by around 40 international trainers. It has grown into one of the biggest Muay Thai and MMA destinations in the world, with over a million Facebook followers (ONE Championship, checked 17 September 2026).

The scale shows up in the timetable. Tiger publishes up to 25 classes a day across Muay Thai, MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing and conditioning. Classes run Monday to Saturday from 6:30am to 7pm, split into beginner, intermediate, advanced and fighter tiers (Muay Thai Holidays, checked 17 September 2026, a booking partner used here because Tiger's own site blocks automated verification tools). Tiger's own FAQ page states a maximum guest-to-trainer ratio of 4:1 in its group classes. That figure is self-published and could not be independently audited for this article, but it is the clearest number either side of this comparison offers on class attention.

Tiger also runs an annual Fight Team Tryouts, a week-long scholarship competition open to amateur and professional fighters 18 and over. Winners get a fully sponsored spot, a one-year visa, and paid accommodation and food. Recent editions have sent winners to ONE Championship on contracts reportedly worth up to US$100,000. Alumni of the program include Alexander Volkanovski, Kai Kara-France, Arman Tsarukyan and Mike Davis, and the 2023 tryouts alone drew 34 competitors (South China Morning Post, checked 17 September 2026).

Who Tiger actually suits: people who want volume and variety, a big international social scene, or an on-site resort ecosystem with everything built in. It also suits anyone chasing a genuine shot at the scholarship pathway toward a professional career. It is a poor fit if what you actually want is a trainer's full attention on your own reps, since that is not the product being sold.

Sinbi Muay Thai: the fighter's gym

Sinbi Muay Thai sits near Nai Harn Beach in Rawai, a different part of the island from the Soi Ta-iad cluster. It positions itself as smaller and more traditional than the mega-camps. It trains young Thai fighters alongside international students, with a trainer roster largely made up of championship-belt holders (sinbimuaythai.com, checked 17 September 2026). Accommodation is 21 rooms in the Sinbi Apartments about 300 metres from the gym, rather than an in-house camp dorm. It is a mix of private and shared rooms, plus two VIP units with a rooftop pool. The gym itself runs Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 6pm, closed Sunday.

Published group rates run from 600 baht for a single class up to 4,000 baht for a two-class weekly pass. A 10-session pass valid for six months costs 5,000 baht. Private training costs 1,000 baht an hour, or 1,500 baht an hour with head trainer Kru Saeng, with 10 and 20-hour packages available at both rates (sinbimuaythai.com, checked 17 September 2026).

The reputation is where Sinbi separates itself from the pack. One independent reviewer visited roughly 20 foreigner-facing gyms across Thailand. That reviewer rated Sinbi "miles above the rest," noting it "regularly attracts the best fighters in the sport" for matches south of Bangkok (Fight Passport, checked 17 September 2026, an independent traveller's review rather than an editorial source). Sinbi does not publish a dedicated fight-team program the way Tiger does. Its reputation for serious, technical training is still consistent across independent reviews.

Who Sinbi actually suits: intermediate and serious practitioners who want harder, more technical training in a smaller, less touristy setting. It suits people who do not mind trading an in-house dorm for a short walk to a beach-adjacent apartment. It shares something with private training in spirit, smaller and more serious, but the actual product is still a shared class with other students, not one-to-one time.

AKA Thailand: the MMA-and-Muay-Thai resort

AKA Thailand is the Phuket outpost of the American Kickboxing Academy brand. It is co-owned by original AKA team member Mike "Quick" Swick, a 14-time UFC veteran, alongside AKA founder Javier Mendez and Blair Speers. Swick leads the MMA program directly, while the Muay Thai side is staffed by Thai trainers with their own world-championship backgrounds (akathailand.com, checked 17 September 2026). The site describes itself as "the world's premier luxury training resort." It sits on a 3-acre jungle property with a 5,000-square-foot MMA and BJJ space and over 3,000 square feet of mat area.

Accommodation runs through partner hotels, resorts and bungalows nearby rather than an in-house dorm, though the site states on-site accommodation is in progress. Pricing is set out as weekly and monthly all-inclusive travel packages, not a simple day rate. Standard runs ฿19,000 a week, rising through Deluxe and Gold tiers to ฿34,000 for the Gold Inclusive package. Each tier bundles a set number of private Muay Thai sessions, meals, and extras like motorbike rental (akathailand.com, checked 17 September 2026). That puts AKA well above Tiger and Sinbi on price, though the package includes more than training alone.

Who AKA actually suits: people who specifically want MMA cross-training under a recognizable US coaching name alongside their Muay Thai. It also suits visitors comfortable with a higher price point who do not mind arranging their own nearby accommodation rather than getting an on-site dorm bed.

What you actually get for the money

Lined up against each other, the three camps and private training land in genuinely different price tiers, and the gap is not subtle once you compare a training-only week against AKA's all-inclusive bundle.

Tiger does not fit cleanly onto that same chart, because it does not sell a plain baht-per-week training rate either. Its price is bundled into a stay booked through partner travel operators, starting from roughly £320 per person including a daily 500-baht food credit (Muay Thai Holidays, checked 17 September 2026). Like AKA, that number buys more than training alone, so it is not directly comparable to Sinbi's or Kru Marn's day-rate pricing.

The honest takeaway is not that one option is cheap and the others are expensive. It is that Tiger and AKA are selling a bundled stay, where training is one line item among several, while Sinbi and private training price the training itself directly. The one thing none of them sell: undivided attention

Price is not really what separates these options. Attention is. In a group class, even a well-run one, a trainer is watching several students at once, which means your reps get corrected for a fraction of the hour. A private session is built the opposite way.

Kru Marn has 180 professional fights, 150 wins and more than 15 years teaching. Dragon Muay Thai: a training street, not a resort compound

Kru Marn teaches at Dragon Muay Thai on Soi Ta-iad, the road locally known as Fitness Street.
